Garbage Pickup

Curbside Pickup-Mondays & Thursdays
Thursdays - Junk (furniture, household items, etc.) Curbside pickup only.

Recycling Pickup

1st & 3rd Wednesdays - Curbside pickup in reusable containers of commingled glass, aluminum, tin & steel cans, plastic containers with recycling emblem 1 or 2 in center.

Receptacles containing the following items WILL NOT be picked up: aluminum foil, plastic other than 1 & 2, waxed milk and juice containers, ceramics, window glass and plastic bags. Clean plastic bags may be placed in containers at Stop & Shop, A&P, Kings & Shop Rite.

2nd & 4th Wednesdays - Curbside pickup of newsprint, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office and computer paper, paper bags, telephone books, cardboard and cereal type boxes tied in bundles not to exceed 12" or placed in brown paper bags. Corrugated boxes are recyclable; do not put out for garbage.

Thursdays - By prior appointment only (call 201 768-5407): large appliances, household equipment, screens; refrigerators, air conditioners and ice makers with freon removed by a certified service person. (If you are buying a new appliance, check with the merchant whether he will remove and dispose of your old appliance.)

THERE IS NO GARBAGE PICK-UP ON MAY 28, JULY 4, SEPTEMBER 3, OR NOVEMBER 22.

THERE ARE NO RECYCLING PICKUPS ON THE FIFTH WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH

Mondays - GRASS COLLECTION - Starting April 1 through October 31, grass will be picked up curbside when placed in UNCOVERED REUSABLE 30 GALLON CONTAINERS. Grass in bags WILL NOT be picked up.

Leaf Pick-Up

Leaf pick up begins October 15th and ends the week of December 3rd. All leaves must be spread out close to the curb, but not within 10 feet of any storm drains. Leaf piles must be kept free of twigs, branches, stones and grass or they will not be picked up!

After December 10th and until April 15th, leaves are to be bagged for pick up.

REMEMBER DO NOT PUT LEAVES OUT BEFORE OCTOBER 15TH. Branch chipping ends the week of October 1st and resumes the week of December 17th.

Other Recycling Information

BRANCHES & LIMBS - Materials must be less than 6' long and 60 lbs, for pickup by the DPW. Branches must be placed curbside, not in the street, in neat piles, all facing the same way. Wood chips & mulch are available at Wakelee Field beyond the bridge.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE - Bergen County Sponsers three collection dates each year at Bergen Community College. The program is available free of charge to Bergen County residents and provides an outlet for proper disposal of household hazardous waste.

All collection sites open at 9am and close promptly at 3pm. Waste should be in original containers and labeled.

Building and construction materials WILL NOT be collected. Private arrangements must be made for disposal.

Battery Recycling - Household Battery Collection Containers are located at the front of the DPW Garage, the Railroad Station Senior Center and the rear door of Borough Hall. No automotive batteries please!

Demarest Public Library Annual Spring Fair
Saturday, May 17, 2008, Arts & Crafts Exhibitors Welcome!

The Demarest Public Library Association's Annual Spring Fair will once again be held at the Demarest Duck Pond on Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 10 am until 4 pm (Rain Date Saturday, May 24). Attendees of all ages will enjoy fine Arts & Crafts, live music in the Peace Gazebo, baked goods, traditional Indian, Korean and Japanese food concessions, canoe rides sponsored by the Boy Scouts, exciting children's rides and games, new merchandise, discounted books, White Elephant Sale, and much, much more, at what has become a favorite tradition among area residents.

Proceeds from the annual fundraiser go directly to the Library to improve the services it offers to the community.

American Cancer Society's Relay For Life To Be Held In Old Tappan. The Relay For Life of Northern Valley, previously held at Northern Valley Regional High School, Demarest for the past three years has merged with this Relay to form a broader community event.
